Since quite some time the weekend of the 27th and 28th of September was planned to celebrate three belated birthdays at the ARA house. Again at that nice house next to the sea where you can just pick some coconut from the trees in the garden if you feel like it. And again the whole group of volunteers of the first week met. Even some other volunteers who where in Ghana already a bit longer or a bit shorter joined. One guy - Alex - was actually with me at the primary school in Frankfurt eight years ago. How small is the world?!?
We stayed from friday until sunday. Friday we went to the Accra mall.
A supermarket with European prices, luxury toilets and everything looked like we entered another world.
When we passed by the radiostation they spontaniously made us come inside. Being white is always an attraction here. You notice that everyday being called 'Ubruni' (=white woman/man) on the streets as if you were a celebrity. Sometimes it can get annoying, even though everyone means it in a nice way. They always smile if you simply answer 'Ubibini' (=black woman/man).
The actual party was saturday. We had a nice meal in the evening and later went to the beach bar we already went a few times during the first week.
That's the skirt I got from the tailor! :-) |
Sunday relaxing at the beach:
After the weekend many of us were suddenly sick. My hostmother got Malaria (still going to work though - you can't weaken a Ghanaian that easy!), one mentor got very sick, a few volunteers and finally also me.
No Malaria, even though I expected that after all the bites I got. I went to the hospital, which was pretty clean and more organized than I had expected. A little test - looking like a pregnancy test - was made to see if I have Malaria and some medication for coughing and my throat. The only very difficult thing for everyone in the hospital seemed to be my name. I never wrote my name that clearly on a peace of paper as I did there.. still my name changed into Neubru, Elenu, Neubeu, etc.
Since yesterday I'm fine again, like most of the others too and we're ready to party at the upcoming festival Odwira! I'll tell about that when I'm back, I'm really looking forward to it!!
